Which should you choose: Half Chaps or Gaiters ?

Many riders wonder about the difference between half chaps and gaiters when choosing the right riding kit. Although they look similar, these two types of lower leg protection have differences in design. In this article, we’ll explain the key differences between half chaps and gaiters, helping you decide which option is best for your riding style and needs.

Do Riders need Half Chaps or Gaiters ?

The answer is Yes! but before we look at the differences between the two, it is important to understand why this piece of riding kit is so important. Both Half Chaps & Gaiters protect the inside of the lower leg from pinching between the saddle and the stirrup strap. Any rider who has ridden without this protection will tell you just how uncomfortable – and scarring ! this can be. This article tells you more about the benefits of riding chaps.

Half Chaps

Half chaps protect half the leg – from below the knee to ankle. Full chaps protect the full length of the leg from crotch to ankle. The original full chaps – full-length leg covering worn by the cowboys of Mexico (The Chapparal), to protect their legs from gorze and scrubland. Full Chaps cover the full length of the legs from the top down to the ankle.

Here are key features of Half Chaps:

  • They protect the lower leg from rubbing and pinching of the stirrup strap
  • Can offer support of the lower leg for the rider
  • Protects the lower leg from knocks and scrapes when out hacking
  • Half chaps have the zip down the side of the leg and zip downwards from the knee
  • Half chaps usually have elasticated panels at the side and/or ankle to allow for greater flexibility and comfort
  • Half chaps tend to have a slight shaping at the top
  • Half Chaps can be made from a variety of textiles: leather, suede, neoprene, faux suede

Riding Leather Gaiters

Gaiters are similar to Half Chaps in that they protect the lower leg.  Key differences Gaiters are that :

  • we position the zip at the back
  • the zip works from the bottom to the top
  • our back zip design gives a neater size view and replicates the look of a long boot
  • to replicate the look of a long boot, we make our gaiters from leather
  • they offer a less expensive option than long boots
  • they offer many more sizing options than long boots

Please note that because our chaps have elasticated panels, we give a range of calf-widths ie 35cm-40cm. The first number (here 35cm) is the width with no stretch. The second number (here 40cm) is the width when fully stretched . The chaps will fit well if your calf measurement falls within this range – but we would advise you to choose the size where your calf-width is in the middle of the range. In this way the elastic is working to give a snug fit but there is still some give for extra comfort and flexibility

Just Chaps have been designing and manufacturing men’s half chaps since 2003; so you are in safe hands. Here we look at the key features needed in a pair of men’s half chaps; what materials are recommended and why; top products and styles and how to maintain them.

Key Features for Men’s Half Chaps

  • Durability: stitching, zips, poppers. Just Chaps use only original YKK zips in the manufacture of the men’s half chaps together with the best poppers and stitching.

What Size Men’s Half Chaps do I Need? Can you fit Tall Riders?

Men (typically) have a longer lower leg than women and therefore require our longer sizes. We advise a very close fit for half chaps so that they do not twist or rub when worn.

Our Sizing Guide is easy to follow, but as a general rule of thumb:

  • A Rider over 5’6″ will take Medium length Half Chaps
  • A Rider approx 6′ will take a Long length Half Chaps
  • A Rider over 6′ will take Extra Long length Half Chaps
  • note : all the above lengths have varying width fittings. Measure your calf at its widest to find your perfect fit.

How should Men’s Half Chaps Fit?

Men’s Half Chaps should fit close to the lower leg, as snug as possible. Too tight and they will be uncomfortable; too loose and they will twist. Pick the size which gives you as close a fit as possible; the leather or suede will give as you wear.

Which Men’s Half Chaps are Best?

Men generally choose either:

  • Classic Suede Half Chaps: traditional no-nonsense half chaps made from durable suede that offers great grip in the saddle

Maintenance of Men’s Half Chaps

  • Classic Suede Half Chaps, require little attention. Simply hang to dry (away from direct heat) and brush to remove dirt and dander. There’s more to read on Classic Suede here.
  • Saltos Leather Half Chaps will continue to look their best and last longer with a little attention. Simply remove dirt and dander with a damp soapy sponge and then feed with a leather oil or cream. Allow to dry (away from direct heat).

Do I need Men’s Half Chaps or Men’s Full Chaps?

Good question….we will explain.

Men’s Half Chaps –

Cover the lower leg, are very close fitting and designed to prevent the stirrup strap from pinching the inner calf. Do you struggle to find Long Boots ? We have the perfect alternative.

Men’s Full Chaps

Cover the entire leg from top to bottom. Riders wear Full Chaps to keep clean, stay dry and to protect clothing. At Just Chaps we have two Full Chaps options – both are waterproof.
