Need More Calf Room? Zip Extension Panels for Half Chaps and Gaiters

Pair of black zip extension panels for Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters

Need extra calf width for your half chaps or gaiters?

Just Chaps offers half chaps and gaiters in a wide range of calf widths. If you need more room than our widest sizes provide, zip extension panels offer additional calf width. We have compatible panels for Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters, All Purpose Riding Half Chaps, Cool Riding Half Chaps and Classic Suede Riding Half Chaps.

Why Use Extension Panels?

Zip extension panels add calf room to compatible half chaps and gaiters. They can help if:

  • You need more width than our widest calf sizes offer.
  • Your usual fit feels too tight over thicker riding layers.
  • Your calves differ in size and one leg needs extra room.

Choose the correct height first, then check which panel fits your half chaps or gaiters.

Easy to Attach, Easy to Use

Each extension panel zips between the two sides of the existing zip, adding room around the calf. Use the panel designed for your half chaps or gaiters, in the correct size.

The fitting video below shows how to attach an extension panel to Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters.

Which Size Extension Panel?

Choose your extension panel by the height of your half chaps or gaiters:

  • Extra Short height: choose an Extra Short extension panel.
  • Short height: choose a Short extension panel.
  • Medium height: choose a Medium extension panel.

Choosing the right extension panel

Check the extension panel’s product page for compatible styles and sizes before ordering. If you’re unsure which panel you need, contact us with your product range, size and calf measurement.

What is the difference between Riding Half Chaps and Gaiters ?

Rider wearing black leather riding gaiters, viewed from front

Half Chaps and Gaiters: the key difference

Half chaps and riding gaiters both cover the lower leg when worn with short riding boots. For everyday riding, many riders choose half chaps, which come in a range of materials. Leather riding gaiters give a closer, more structured look, similar to long riding boots. The best choice depends on the fit you prefer and how you plan to use them.

Half Chaps

Half chaps cover the lower leg from below the knee to the ankle. Worn with short riding boots, they help protect the leg from rubbing against the stirrup leathers. They are available in different materials, including leather, suede and neoprene, so riders can choose the feel and finish that suits them.

  • They usually have a side zip that closes from top to bottom.
  • Stretch panels can give more flexibility in fit.
  • They are popular with beginners for everyday riding, and with experienced riders who want an alternative to long boots.
  • Half chaps are often less expensive than leather riding gaiters.

For a leather option, see our Saltos Leather Riding Half Chaps.

For more detail on materials, fit and sizing, read our Complete Guide to Riding Half Chaps.

Riding Leather Gaiters

Leather riding gaiters also cover the lower leg, but give a closer, more structured look similar to long riding boots. They are often chosen for competitions or by riders who prefer that style for everyday riding.

  • The zip sits at the back and closes from bottom to top.
  • Leather riding gaiters are lined, so they generally have less give than unlined leather half chaps.
  • Different heights and calf widths help riders find a closer fit.
  • They can offer the appearance of long boots when worn with suitable short riding boots.

See our Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters for available sizes and product details.

For more detail on fit and sizing, read our Complete Guide to Riding Gaiters.

How do you choose between half chaps and gaiters?

Choose half chaps if you want a wider choice of materials or a practical option for everyday riding. Choose leather riding gaiters if you prefer a closer, more structured look.

For either option, measure your calf at its widest point and use your height to select the right size. Check our Sizing Guide before choosing your size.

Full Chaps vs Half Chaps and Gaiters: What’s the Difference?

Rider wearing black Equino leather full chaps with contrasting orange piping

Full chaps, half chaps and riding gaiters all protect a rider’s legs. However, they differ in coverage, the way riders wear them and the type of riding they suit. Full chaps cover the entire leg. Half chaps and gaiters cover the lower leg, and riders wear them with short riding boots.

This guide explains the differences between the three options. It will help you choose the most suitable style for your riding, preferred appearance and budget.

What Are Full Chaps?

Leather full chaps cover the entire leg from the upper thigh to the ankle and fasten around the waist. Riders wear them over breeches, jodhpurs or other riding trousers with short riding boots.

Made from leather, they provide robust full-leg protection and a traditional appearance. They offer considerably more coverage than half chaps or gaiters but are also heavier and generally take longer to put on.

Leather full chaps may suit riders who want maximum leg coverage for longer rides, training or general riding.

What Are Half Chaps?

Half chaps cover the lower leg from the ankle to just below the knee. Riders wear half chaps with short riding boots. They help protect the lower leg from rubbing and provide additional grip and support when riding.

Compared with full chaps, half chaps are lighter, easier to put on and generally less expensive. They are available in several materials, including leather, suede and neoprene, making them suitable for beginners, everyday riders and more experienced competitors.

Leather half chaps provide a smart, traditional appearance while remaining comfortable and practical for regular riding.

What Are Riding Gaiters?

Riding gaiters cover the lower leg and are worn with short riding boots. Although they provide similar coverage to half chaps, gaiters are usually more structured and closely fitted, creating the smart appearance of long riding boots.

Leather riding gaiters are generally lined and fasten with a zip at the back of the leg. Because the lining allows less stretch than an unlined leather half chap, accurate calf and height measurements are particularly important.

Gaiters may suit riders who want a smart, streamlined appearance for regular riding, training or competitions.

Full Chaps, Half Chaps or Gaiters: Which Should You Choose?

Choose leather full chaps if you want maximum leg coverage, robust protection and a traditional full-chap appearance. They are the most specialised and generally the most expensive option.

Choose half chaps if you want practical lower-leg protection that is easy to put on, comfortable for everyday riding and available in a wide choice of materials and prices.

Choose riding gaiters if you prefer a close, structured fit and the smart appearance of long riding boots while retaining the convenience of short boots.

Waterproof full chaps are a separate option for riders who primarily need protection from rain and wet weather. They are lighter than leather full chaps and are designed to be worn as a removable outer layer.

Find the Right Chaps or Gaiters

The right choice depends on how much leg coverage you need, the type of riding you do and the appearance you prefer. Careful measurements are particularly important when choosing close-fitting half chaps or riding gaiters.

For more detailed help, explore our guides to riding half chaps and riding gaiters, view the Equino Leather Full Chaps or read our guide to waterproof riding wear.

Complete Guide to Riding Gaiters

Rider wearing black leather riding gaiters

Riding gaiters fit closely around the lower leg and are designed to be worn with short riding or jodhpur boots. They offer the smart appearance of long riding boots while retaining the flexibility and convenience of separate boots and gaiters.

A well-fitting pair can help reduce rubbing from the stirrup leathers, provide support around the lower leg and create a neat, streamlined look. This guide explains what riding gaiters are, how they differ from half chaps, how they should fit and how to choose the right size.

What are riding gaiters?

Riding gaiters cover the lower leg from the ankle to just below the knee. They are worn over riding breeches, jodhpurs or riding tights and paired with short riding boots. Unlike protective gaiters used for walking or outdoor work, equestrian riding gaiters are shaped specifically for use in the saddle.

Leather riding gaiters tend to have a structured, formal shape designed to resemble the leg of a long riding boot. Just Chaps Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters have a rear zip, a shaped calf, a slim ankle and an elegant Spanish-cut topline.

What are the benefits of wearing riding gaiters?

Riding gaiters combine a smart appearance with everyday practicality. They can:

  •  help reduce rubbing and pinching from the stirrup leathers against the lower leg;
  •  provide a close, supportive feeling around the calf and ankle;
  •  give the appearance of long riding boots when worn with suitable short riding boots;
  •  offer the flexibility and convenience of separate boots and gaiters;
  •  be easier to fit than some long boots, particularly when different calf widths and heights are available;
  •  be suitable for everyday riding, schooling, hacking and competitions.

What is the difference between riding gaiters and half chaps?

Both riding gaiters and half chaps cover the lower leg and are worn with short riding boots. The main difference is usually their shape and intended appearance.

Riding gaiters tend to be more structured and formal, with a close-fitting ankle and shaped topline that create the appearance of a long riding boot. The Just Chaps Saltos gaiters fasten with a zip at the back of the leg. Half chaps generally have a less formal appearance and are available in a wider variety of practical materials and styles.

If you are deciding between the two, read our Complete Guide to Riding Half Chaps as well. The best choice will depend on fit, comfort, the type of riding you do and the look you prefer. For a shorter side-by-side comparison, read our Half Chaps vs Riding Gaiters guide.

For a wider comparison that also includes full chaps, read our guide to full chaps, half chaps and gaiters.

Who can wear riding gaiters?

Riding gaiters can be worn by adult and young riders, from beginners and leisure riders to experienced competitors. They are useful for everyday riding, lessons, Pony Club activities, schooling, hacking and competitions.

Riding gaiters can also be a smart option for competitions when permitted under the relevant rules. Read our guide to wearing gaiters or half chaps for dressage competitions.

How should riding gaiters fit?

Riding gaiters should feel close and supportive without being painfully tight. They should follow the shape of the lower leg, sit neatly below the back of the knee and fit closely around the ankle without large gaps or excessive wrinkling.

The zip should close securely without being forced, and the gaiter should not twist or slip down during wear. New leather gaiters may initially feel snug, as natural leather will soften and give with wear. The breathable faux suede lining in Saltos gaiters helps them retain their shape while remaining comfortable.

For step-by-step instructions, read our guide to putting on riding half chaps and gaiters.

How to measure for riding gaiters

Just Chaps sizing uses two key pieces of information: the rider’s approximate height and the calf measurement. Together, these help identify the correct height and width combination.

  1. Use the rider’s approximate height to identify the most likely height category.
  2. Wearing the breeches, jodhpurs or riding tights normally used for riding, measure around the widest part of the calf.
  3. Keep the tape measure level and comfortably close to the leg without pulling it tight.
  4. Compare both measurements with the Just Chaps Sizing Guide.

Use the Just Chaps Sizing Guide to find the most suitable combination. If you are between sizes or unsure, contact us for personal fitting advice before ordering.

For help choosing your size, read our guide to measuring for half chaps and riding gaiters.

If you need a shorter height, read our guide to short riding half chaps and gaiters.

Riding Gaiters for Wider Calves and Extension Panels

Our Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters come in wider calf fittings. Start by checking the sizes available in the range. For help comparing the options, read our guide to half chaps and riding gaiters for wider calves.

If you need additional calf room, our Saltos Gaiter Extension Panel works with compatible Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters. Choose the panel that matches your gaiter height and check the compatible sizes on the product page.

Children’s gaiters should fit closely and comfortably, but there should still be room for movement and growth. Always check the Just Chaps Sizing Guide.

For children’s styles and sizing advice, read our guide to children’s riding half chaps and gaiters.

How to care for leather riding gaiters

Remove surface dirt with a damp cloth and use suitable leather-care products to keep the leather supple and looking its best. Keep the zip running smoothly by removing any trapped dirt or fabric before fastening.

For step-by-step advice, read our guide to caring for leather half chaps and gaiters.

Riding gaiters are designed to be worn with short riding or jodhpur boots in a matching colour. Choose boots that work comfortably with the gaiters and create a neat fit around the ankle.

Can I wear riding gaiters for competitions?

Yes, where permitted by the rules for your discipline and competition. Always check the current requirements before competing.

Can children wear riding gaiters?

Yes. Children’s riding gaiters are available in sizes designed for younger riders. A comfortable, close fit is important, but there should still be room for movement and growth.

What Are Riding Chaps Used For? Benefits for Horse Riders

Rider wearing brown Classic Suede Riding Half Chaps with short riding boots beside a horse

Riding chaps are worn over riding trousers to help protect the legs and make riding more comfortable. Half chaps cover the lower leg and are worn with short riding boots, while full chaps cover the leg from the upper thigh to the ankle.

If you are wondering what riding chaps are used for, the answer depends on the style. Half chaps help reduce rubbing from the stirrup leathers. Full chaps provide more coverage, with waterproof styles helping to keep your legs clean and dry.

What Are Riding Chaps?

There are two main types of riding chaps: half chaps and full chaps. Although they share a name, they serve different purposes.

Half chaps fit around the calf, from the ankle to just below the knee. They fasten around the lower leg and have an underfoot strap to help keep them in place.

Full chaps fasten around the waist and cover both legs while leaving the seat uncovered. They are available in different materials, including leather for robust leg coverage and waterproof fabrics for wet weather.

Riding gaiters also cover the lower leg. Leather gaiters usually have a more structured shape, giving the appearance of long riding boots when paired with short boots.

Why Do Horse Riders Wear Half Chaps?

Half chaps provide a layer between your lower leg and the stirrup leathers. This helps reduce rubbing and pinching, especially during longer rides.

They also help keep riding trousers neatly contained around the calf and can provide additional grip against the saddle. A snug, comfortable fit helps prevent loose material from bunching around the leg.

For many riders, half chaps and short riding boots are a practical alternative to long boots. You can choose the boots and half chaps separately to suit your feet and calves, and replace either item when needed.

What Are the Benefits of Half Chaps?

Half chaps are popular for lessons, everyday riding and longer days in the saddle. Their benefits include:

  • Helping protect the lower leg from rubbing against the stirrup leathers.
  • Offering a choice of materials, including neoprene, suede and leather.
  • Allowing riders to wear short riding boots with separate lower-leg coverage.
  • Providing a choice of calf widths and heights.
  • Often costing less than a pair of long riding boots.

Different materials suit different preferences. Neoprene offers stretch and easy care, suede has a traditional feel, and leather provides a smart finish.

For advice on materials, styles and fit, read our Complete Guide to Riding Half Chaps.

What Are Riding Gaiters Used For?

Riding gaiters offer lower-leg coverage with a closer, more structured appearance. Worn with short riding boots, they create a look similar to long boots.

Some riders prefer gaiters for their smart finish, while others choose half chaps for a softer, more flexible feel. Both can help reduce rubbing from the stirrup leathers.

Our Complete Guide to Riding Gaiters explains their features and how to choose the right fit.

What Are Full Chaps Used For?

Full chaps provide coverage from the upper thigh to the ankle. Leather full chaps offer a traditional style and a substantial layer over your riding trousers.

Waterproof full chaps serve a different purpose: helping keep your legs dry and your riding trousers clean during wet rides or work around the yard. Fleece-lined options also provide extra warmth in colder weather.

Because full chaps leave the seat uncovered, they provide different coverage from waterproof trousers. Your choice depends on the weather and how you plan to wear them.

Do You Need Half Chaps to Ride?

Half chaps are useful, but they are not compulsory for every rider. If you wear suitable long riding boots, you already have lower-leg coverage.

If you ride in short riding boots, half chaps can make riding more comfortable by helping reduce rubbing from the stirrup leathers. Beginners may find them a practical first purchase, and experienced riders often use them for everyday riding too.

Need Help Choosing Riding Chaps?

The right choice depends on the coverage you need, the boots you wear and the fit you prefer.

At Just Chaps, we can help you choose a suitable style and size. For half chaps or gaiters, have your height and calf measurement ready, and let us know which boots you plan to wear.

How to Care for Leather Riding Half Chaps and Gaiters

Rider wearing leather riding gaiters with short riding boots

Looking after leather Half Chaps.

Regular cleaning and conditioning help keep leather riding half chaps and gaiters supple and in good condition. This guide covers cleaning, drying and caring for Saltos Leather Riding Half Chaps and Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters.

Cleaning Leather Half Chaps and Gaiters

Brush off loose dust and dried mud with a soft brush. Then wipe the leather gently with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt. Use only a little water and avoid soaking the leather. Clean around the zips carefully to remove grit and mud.

Drying After Cleaning or Wet Rides

Wipe away excess water with a clean, dry cloth. Leave your half chaps or gaiters to dry naturally at room temperature in a well-ventilated place. Keep them away from radiators and other direct heat, and avoid storing them while damp.

Conditioning the Leather

Apply a small amount of leather balsam or conditioner suitable for the leather, following the care product’s instructions. Test it on a small, hidden area first, as it may darken the colour. Use sparingly and keep it away from the zips and elastic panels.

Caring for Zips and Storing Your Chaps

Keep the zip teeth free from mud and grit, and avoid forcing the zip if it catches. Once your half chaps or gaiters are dry, store them in a clean, dry place without folding or crushing the leather.

How to Put On Riding Half Chaps and Gaiters

Rider wearing brown All Purpose Riding Half Chaps with short riding boots

Half chaps and riding gaiters are worn over your riding trousers and with short riding boots. Putting them on correctly helps them sit neatly around your calf and over the top of your boots.

This guide explains how to put on riding half chaps and gaiters, position the underfoot strap and check the fit.

Start with Your Riding Trousers and Boots

Put on the breeches, jodhpurs or riding tights you normally wear for riding. Smooth out any folds around your calf and ankle, then put on and fasten your boots.

Half chaps and gaiters sit over the top of your short boots. Try them with the boots you intend to ride in, as the shape and thickness of the boot can affect the fit around the ankle.

If you wear chunkier riding boots, read our guide to half chaps that fit with chunky boots.

How to Put On Riding Half Chaps

Our riding half chaps have a side zip, which sits on the outside of your leg and closes from top to bottom. The inner panel sits against the horse.

  1. Open the zip fully and undo any fastening tabs.

  2. Place the elasticated underfoot strap beneath the arch of your boot, just in front of the heel.

  3. Bring the half chap around your lower leg, with the zip on the outside.

  4. Join the zip at the top, then zip down towards the ankle.

  5. Keep your riding trousers clear of the zip as you close it.

  6. Keep one finger behind the zip as you zip down, helping to keep your riding trousers and socks clear.
  7. Secure any fastening tabs and check that the half chap sits straight.

The strap should lie flat beneath your boot. It helps keep the half chap in position and should not sit beneath the heel.

How to Put On Riding Gaiters

Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters fasten at the back of the leg. Their zip closes from bottom to top. Wear them with suitable short riding or jodhpur boots.

  1. Open the rear zip fully and undo any fastening tabs.

  2. Position the underfoot strap beneath the arch of your boot, just in front of the heel.

  3. Wrap the gaiter around your lower leg, keeping the zip centred at the back.

  4. Join the zip at the bottom, near your ankle, then zip upwards towards the top of your calf.

  5. Make sure your riding trousers and socks stay clear of the zip.

  6. Keep one finger behind the zip as you zip up, helping to keep your riding trousers and socks clear.
  7. Secure any fastening tabs and check that the gaiter sits neatly over your boot.

Sitting down can make it easier to reach the rear zip. Bring the edges together as you fasten it, allowing the elastic panels to stretch around your calf.

Check the Fit Before Riding

Once both half chaps or gaiters are on, stand up and check their position.

They should feel snug and comfortable around your calf. The top should sit below the back of your knee without digging in when you bend your leg. At the ankle, they should sit neatly over your boots.

Check that:

  • the zips are fully closed and any fastening tabs are secure;

  • the underfoot straps lie flat beneath the arches of your boots;

  • the half chaps or gaiters sit straight without twisting;

  • your riding trousers have not bunched up underneath.

New leather half chaps may feel particularly snug at first. The leather will soften and give with wear, while the elastic panels provide flexibility in the fit.

We use strong YKK zips designed to withstand the tension as the elastic panels stretch. Some resistance when fastening a snug pair is normal.

For help choosing your size, read our guide to measuring for half chaps and riding gaiters.

What If the Zip Will Not Close?

First, check that you have the correct half chap or gaiter on each leg. Then smooth out your riding trousers and make sure the zip is properly joined.

Some tension is normal as the elastic panels stretch. Bring the edges together with one hand while drawing the zip closed with the other. If the slider catches, check for trapped fabric or misalignment before continuing.

Also check the fit with your usual riding boots. A bulkier boot may take up more room around the ankle, even when the calf size is correct.

If you cannot bring the edges together enough to fasten the zip, check your size or contact us for fitting advice.

Some styles have compatible extension panels for additional calf room. Our half chap panel fits All Purpose Riding Half Chaps, Cool Riding Half Chaps and Classic Suede Riding Half Chaps. A separate panel is available for compatible Saltos Leather Riding Gaiters. The half chap panel does not fit Saltos Leather Half Chaps.

Read our guide to extension panels for half chaps and riding gaiters for more information.

Taking Off Your Half Chaps or Gaiters

Undo any fastening tabs, then open the zip fully before removing the half chap or gaiter. Lift your foot to release the underfoot strap from beneath your boot.

Avoid pulling them off while the zip is partly closed. After riding, remove any dirt from the zip and allow damp half chaps or gaiters to dry naturally.

For leather styles, follow our guide to caring for leather half chaps and gaiters.

Caring for Leather Riding Chaps

To keep your leather chaps and gaiters looking and feeling their best, please:

  • do not wear when mucking out; the amonia may prematurely rot the thread
  • clean all mud and dander from the leather using a warm soapy cloth or sponge. Do not over-wet
  • once clean, feed the leather with your favourite leather balm or oil
  • hang to air or dry
