waterproof full chaps with micro fleece lining for winter riding.

Whether you’re in the saddle or in the yard, during the colder months, riders need to keep warm and dry. That’s exactly where Dri-Rider fleece-lined waterproof full chaps come in. Designed with riders in mind, these waterproof full chaps are a versatile addition offering an ideal combination of functionality and comfort. In addition, they are practical enough for everyday use around the yard or in the countryside. What’s more, they provide extra warmth in colder weather. So, let’s look at why they work so well:

Why Do Riders Need Dri-Rider Fleece Lined Full Chaps?

  • Warmth – One of the standout features of Dri-Rider full chaps is their cosy microfleece lining. This high-tech material is a game-changer for anyone who feels the cold – or suffers from chillblains. This micro layer of fleece traps warmth effectively without adding bulk, ensuring your legs stay toasty warm even on the frostiest days.
  • Comfort – Dri-Rider full chaps are easy to wear and very comfortable. With no restriction at the hips, movement is not restricted.
  • Easy Care – simply zip up the zips and close the velcro, wash on a warm wash with non-bio detergent and no fabric softener. Dry away from direct heat ie the radiator.

How are Full Chaps Waterproof and Windproof?

Just Chaps and Dri-Rider (Just Chaps’ Waterproofs range) are at the top of the technical game in terms of waterproofing. Having won several industry awards for product development, you can be assured that you are buying a serious piece of kit.

Dri-Rider Full Chaps are made using a traditional 3-layer construction:

  1. the outer layer is made from Taslon – a durable, windproof and water repellant shell
  2. the mid layer is an impermeable membrane. This critical high performance membrane is both breathable, which means it allows moisture such as body sweat to escape, while preventing rain droplets from getting in. It is also windproof. For performance statistics please see the table below.
  3. the micro fleece lining adds warmth without bulk

Are Waterproof Full Chaps Washable?

Yes. To wash your waterproof chaps simply fasten the zips, velcro and buckle and pop in the washer on a warm cycle (max 40 degrees). Use only a non-bio detergent and no fabric softener (it clogs the membrane). Hang to dry. Do not dry on direct heat such as a radiator as this causes premature degrading of the membrane.

Are Waterpoof Full Chaps Comfortable?

Yes! Dri-Rider Waterproof Full Chaps are designed to be very comfortable with zero restriction at the hip. With a fully adjustable waist with elastic at the back and an adjustable buckle at the front – you have your perfect fit. Simply measure your thigh and inner leg to find your ideal size. There is no need to worry about the waist size as this is fully adjustable.

Technical Performance

The impermeable membrane that we use has the following technical features:

  • Waterproof rating: up to 10,000mm (designed for sustained rain protection)
  • Breathability: 3,000–5,000 g/m²/24h (helps reduce overheating during active wear)

Waterproof Full Chaps not just for riding

Dri-Rider Waterproof Full Chaps are perfect for the colder months and are ideal for not only riding, but any outdoor activity such as;

  • Dog Walking
  • Gardening
  • Teaching
  • Spectating

Leather Riding Full Chaps, Half Chaps & Gaiters. Which one is right for you?

rider wearing saltos leather riding gaiters

Trust the Specialists: Just Chaps.

Many riders search for “leather riding chaps” without realising there are different types. This guide explains the differences between leather half chaps, riding gaiters and full chaps, helping you choose the right pair for your riding style, comfort, and level.

Just Chaps are the UK specialist when it comes to offering riding half chaps, gaiters and full chaps. Let’s look at all options.

Full Chaps: Leather or Waterproof Dri-Rider.

Full Chaps cover the whole length of the leg. Our extensive Dri Rider range of full chaps are worn to keep you warm, dry and clean. Waterproof and lightweight,  they can be worn all year round whether you’re mucking out or riding out. They will also help to prevent pinching of the lower leg caused by stirrup straps. Dri-Rider full chaps are available in all sizes from Age 6 to Adult XL. All adult sizes are available in 2 leg lengths.  Our Full Chaps come in two weights: a fleece-lined option for colder weather and a summer or lightweight version.

Summer-weight waterproof full chaps, perfect for keeping dry and clean.

Leather Full Chaps

Full chaps cover the entire leg from crotch to ankle, offering maximum protection and style. They’re typically worn by more advanced riders or those looking for full leg coverage.

  • Ideal for: Serious training, long rides, or riders who prefer full leg protection
  • Brand highlight: We sell the Equino Leather Full Chaps, crafted from high-quality leather for durability and comfort.

Key features:

  • Full-leg coverage
  • Durable leather construction
  • Classic, professional look

What are Leather Half Chaps?

Leather half chaps are designed to cover the lower leg, sitting snugly above your boots. They provide extra grip, comfort, and protection while riding, without covering the full leg. Riding Half Chaps have a zip at the outside of the leg, for ease of use.

  • Beginner tip: Many beginners refer to half chaps simply as “riding chaps.”
  • Ideal for: Everyday riding, lessons, hacking, and general training.
  • Our recommendation: Check out our Saltos Leather Half Chaps for a classic fit and wide range of sizes.

Key features:

  • Available in multiple sizes
  • Easy to wear over riding boots, including more chunky designs
  • Durable leather for comfort and protection
  • Getting the right size is important. Take a look at our sizing guide or visit our website for further help.
  • Take a look at our advice here on what to buy for young riders.
  • Have you seen our buyer’s guide on best half chaps for men?

What Are Leather Riding Gaiters?

Riding gaiters are similar to half chaps but include a zip at the back. This design is to create the look of a long boot. Do you struggle to find long boots that fit well? If so, perhaps Saltos Gaiters are the solution for you.

  • Ideal for: Riders who want a secure fit with a back-zip option
  • Beginner tip: If you’re unsure whether you need half chaps or gaiters, check for the zip — that’s the main difference.
  • Our recommendation: See our Leather Riding Gaiters collection for more.

Key features:

  • Back zip for style
  • Protects the lower leg like half chaps
  • Stylish and practical for training or hacking

Just Chaps have developed a complete range of equestrian waterproofs – the Dri-Rider range – with riders in mind. This high-spec, technical range has won several industry awards and will not let you down. Here’s an article walking you through the entire range.

Just Chaps offer top tips for women looking to buy waterproof trousers, highlighting the perfect combination of performance and style that Dri-Rider offers the rider – and why Dri-Rider comes out on top. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out, understanding the key features, materials, and styles available can improve your riding enjoyment no end. From high-performance fabrics to clever features, we show you how Dri-Rider are the essential piece of kit to keep you dry – yet still keep you looking smart!

Importance of Equestrian Waterproof Trousers

For a horse rider, the function and fit of riding gear is paramount, particularly when the weather is wet. Waterproof trousers are an essential that can significantly enhance your riding experience. Being out in the rain, dealing with wet, muddy fields is a fact of life for equestrians. Having the right pair of waterproof trousers ensures that you remain dry and comfortable regardless of the weather conditions.

In addition to their practical benefits, Dri-Rider waterproof trousers also allow you to maintain a smart appearance. Equestrian apparel is not only about functionality; it reflects your personal style and passion for the sport. This means you don’t have to sacrifice style for practicality. Instead, you can have the best of both worlds, looking smart while staying protected against the elements.

Key Features to Look for in Waterproof Trousers

When choosing waterproof trousers for horse riding, several key features should guide your decision. Firstly, the material is of the utmost importance. Dri-Rider trousers are made from the latest high-performance fabric that is both breathable yet waterproof. This fabric is designed to keep water out while allowing moisture from perspiration to escape, ensuring that you remain dry and comfortable. The breathability of the material prevents overheating, which is essential during intense riding sessions or warmer weather conditions.

Another crucial feature to consider is the fit and comfort of the trousers. Riding requires a wide range of movement, even when mounting and dismounting Therefore, your waterproof trousers should offer a snug yet flexible fit that doesn’t restrict your movement. Look for articulated knees and adjustable waistbands that can accommodate your body’s movements. A well-fitted pair ensures that you can ride with ease and confidence, without feeling constricted. Dri-Rider waterproof Trousers were developed with all of the above requirements in mind.

Equestrian activities can be tough on clothing, with constant friction from the saddle, contact with the horse, and exposure to harsh environments. Trousers with reinforced seams, sturdy zips, and abrasion-resistant seat can withstand the rigors of riding and last longer. Additionally, features such as water-proof zips and taped seams can further enhance the waterproof capabilities of the trousers. Dri-Rider trousers feature all of the above technical benefits.

How to Choose the Right Fit and Size

Selecting the correct fit and size for your waterproof trousers is essential for comfort and performance. Start by taking accurate measurements of your waist, hips, and inside leg. We provide detailed sizing charts that can help you match your measurements to the appropriate size. When in doubt, opting for a slightly larger size can be beneficial, as it allows for layering and ensures better ease of movement.

The fit of your waterproof trousers should strike a balance between snug and flexibility. The  adjustable waistband can provide a customized fit, while adjustable ankle straps can ensure that the trousers stay securely in place over your boots.

When trying them on, mimic common riding movements such as bending, squatting, and sitting. This will give you a sense of how the trousers will perform during actual riding. Additionally, consider the length of the trousers. They should be long enough to cover your boots and prevent water from seeping in, but not so long that they drag on the ground.

Care and Maintenance of Waterproof Trousers

Proper care and maintenance of your waterproof trousers is crucial to prolong their life and maintain performance. We advise washing your Dri-Rider waterproof trousers in warm water using a gentle detergent that is free from harsh chemicals. Do not use fabric softeners, which can compromise the breathability of the membrane. A warm wash in the machine is perfect.

After washing, it’s important to thoroughly rinse the trousers to remove any detergent residue. Residue can clog the breathable membranes of the fabric, reducing their effectiveness. Do not use bleach or stain removers, as these can damage the fabric. Drying your trousers properly is equally important. Hang to dry, do not dry on a heated surface (radiator) or in a tumble dryer.

There is no need to reproof your Dri-Rider Waterproof Trousers. We’ve gone into more detail in this article about caring for your wateproofs.

Choosing a pair of riding waterproof trousers involves considering many factors, from material and fit, to durability and customer reviews. By prioritizing high-performance fabrics that offer breathability and waterproofing, you can ensure that your Dri-Rider trousers will keep you dry and comfortable during your rides. Paying attention to fit and flexibility is essential for maintaining ease of movement, while durability features such as reinforced seams and sturdy zips can extend the lifespan of your trousers.

Proper care and maintenance are key to preserving the functionality of your waterproof trousers. Following manufacturer care instructions and washing with gentle detergents will help to maintain their performance.

Winter Horse Riding: How to Stay Warm this Season.

waterproof full chaps with micro fleece lining for winter riding.

Riding through winter can be a truly magical experience. From crisp morning air to frosty countryside views, there’s something special about braving the elements with your horse. But cold temperatures, wet weather and biting winds can make winter riding challenging if you’re not properly prepared.

To enjoy Winter, it’s essential to have the right gear to keep you warm and dry. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need—from waterproof chaps to insulated layers – to help you make the most of your winter rides.

Why Proper Winter Riding Gear Matters

Winter weather can be unpredictable and harsh. Without adequate protection, you risk becoming cold, wet, and uncomfortable, which not only spoils your ride but can also affect your safety and your horse’s wellbeing.

Proper riding gear helps you maintain body heat and shield you from wind and rain. Investing in quality winter riding kit is the key to extending your riding season throughout the year.

Riding Waterproofs: Your Best Friend for Wet Weather

One of the most important items in your winter riding wardrobe is a good pair of waterproofs. Whether you choose full chaps or trousers, these protect your legs from rain, mud, and chilly winds. Let’s look at all options.

Fleece-lined waterproof riding chaps – our winter-favourite full chaps, cover the whole length of the leg. They provide extra insulation and are perfect for colder days when you need that extra layer of warmth without sacrificing flexibility. The micro fleece lining adds warm without bulk and is a real favourite of anyone who has to spend hours outside during the colder months.

For milder days, the lightweight waterproof chaps again offers a waterproof shell that is breathable but without the extra warmth of the micro-fleece lining.

Both options are designed to repel water and block wind, making them ideal for unpredictable winter conditions.

Alternatively, our multi award-winning riding trousers are a firm favourite. With sizes and leg lengths for everyone, we can fit all riders. The trousers can be worn as over-trousers – perfect for keeping breeches clean, or as trousers – possibly with a pair of thermals underneath.

Which are the best Half Chaps for winter riding?

All Half Chaps will help to protect your lower leg from the cold and wet. All of the textiles we use in the manufacture of Half Chaps are wind and rain resistant. If you are looking for a little extra warmth, All Purpose Half Chaps, which are made from neoprene, will most probably offer more warmth than the other designs. They will sheild your legs from wind and wet and keep in the warmth generated by your legs.

Layer Up: Base Layers and Insulation

Along with waterproof chaps or trousers, layering your clothing is vital for winter comfort. Start with moisture-wicking base layers that draw sweat away from your skin. Our GCF Base Layer is perfect for this season. A mid-layer of fleece or wool for warmth can be topped off with a waterproof, breathable riding jacket to shield you from the elements.

Don’t forget insulated gloves – we have a great range your extremities are often the first to get cold.

How to Care for Dri-Rider Waterproof Trousers and Full Chaps.

how do you care for dri-rider waterproof trousers?

High-tech waterproofs – can I wash them?

Caring for your Dri-Rider riding waterproofs is an important but simple task. Here we’ll talk you though the technology of waterproofing and how best to care for high-tech garments. We start with Dri-Rider Full Chaps and then move on to our award-winning Trousers.

Dri-Rider Full Chaps; the technology.

Our Dri-Rider full chaps use a 3-layer technology to achieve water and windproof protection. The technology allows the garment to breathe to prevent moisture building up inside. This technology was originally developed for the motorbike industry where conditions are extremely harsh.

  • The tough Taslan outer shell has been treated with a durable water-repellent and is also tough enough to manage the wear and tear of horse-riding
  • The microporous Reissa membrane which sits under the shell. The membrane  is very thin and contains microscopic pores which are too small to let water droplets in – but big enough to allow water vapour to escape. This is what keeps the rider dry and cool whilst preventing moisture building up inside
  • Our lightweight full chaps use a mesh wicking lining as the 3rd layer. Our fleece-lined full chaps, use a micro fleece lining for added warmth, without bulk.

technical drawing showing the 3 layer technology of waterproof full chaps.

How to care for waterproof full chaps.

Caring for your Dri-Rider full chaps is straightforward. Simply wash them regularly to prevent sweat and dirt from clogging up the membrane and reducing breathability.

  • Before washing, fasten all zips and Velcro and shorten stirrup straps
  • Use a gentle, warm machine setting, max 40 degrees.
  • Do not scrub
  • Do not use biological detergents – or any products that contain bleach or solvents
  • Do not use fabric softener – it clogs the membrane
  • Hang to dry at room temperature away from direct heat. Direct heat can destry the membrane.
  • Do not use a tumble dryer
  • Do not be tempted to re-proof the outer layer as this will reduce breathability and trap moisture

Following these simple tips will prolong the life of your chaps and allow you to ride in comfort whatever the weather.

Dri-Rider Waterproof Trousers: the technology

We use the latest waterproofing technology with our waterproof trousers. Both our Dri-Rider Riding Trousers and newly introduced Country Trousers use a fully-waterproof two-layer technology. What does this mean?

  • The outer layer of fabric is made waterproof by a microporous membrane which is fused to it.
  • This outer layer has an external dirt repellent finish. It also repels rain, snow and wind
  • It keeps body heat in and wicks perspiration to the outside.
  • All seams are taped. The two layers comprise a tough yet lightweight outer (with an impermeable membrane attached) and a breathable mesh lining. In terms of testing, this fabric meets standards EN 343 3.3 – which is the highest level of waterproofness and breathability. This equates to a testing of up to 15,000mm.

Can you wash your Dri-Rider Waterproofs?

We advise the following:

  • When not in use, hang your trousers by the back hoop and allow to dry out
  • Before washing, fasten all zips and Velcro and shorten stirrup straps
  • Wash in the machine on a gentle, warm machine setting, max 40 degrees.
  • Enjoy!

Dri-Rider Riding Waterproofs – the Ultimate Guide

3 female riders - one adult, one teenager and one girl wearing Just Chaps Dri-Rider waterproof trousers

Essential Dri-Rider Waterproofs – everything you need to know.

Here is your ultimate guide to essential Dri-Rider waterproofs, a complete range of waterproof trousers and full chaps designed for riders by Just Chaps.

Just Chaps have successfully developed a complete range of technical waterproofs for riders. Here’s more about each product, development of the Dri-Rider brand and why we feel sure you will love them.

Are waterproofs for riders really essential ?

In a word – yes ! You may remember Just Chaps’ original waterproof over trousers – they were simple in design, basically two rectangles with an elasticated waist, brought together by two full-length zips. In their day, they were brilliant – you could whip them off in the saddle (!), required little or no maintenance and kept you pretty much dry and clean. However, they didn’t fit very well and they could make you a bit warm.

the original design of waterproof riding trousers

Product Development

Textiles

Just Chaps began to research how waterproofs for riding could be improved both in terms of fabric and product design. The team visualised riding trousers that were comfortable and easy to wear and reliably waterproof.

The revolutionary microporous membrane was now available (think Goretex). This clever, wispy thin membrane worked by having tiny holes – or pores – which were too small to allow water in – but still large enough to allow water vapour (ie sweat) out. No more plasticated fabric. The membrane would sit under the tough nylon outer layer and do the wonderful job of allowing moisture vapour to escape but not let rain droplets through.

To finish off the trousers, the team added a lightweight inner lining to provide protection for the microporous membrane. The lining wicks away any moisture that gathered inside the trouser, either due to warm, humid weather or the rider working hard and generating a lot of body heat.

The all-important micro-porous membrane.

image shows how the impermeable membrane works

Shape

The development team also changed the cut and fit of the trousers, adding several new features.

  • Well cut and fitting – so they fit like a proper pair of trousers
  • Slim in the leg – but just wide enough to take a pair of country boots (with boot access zips up to the calf)
  • With a non-slip seat
  • Nice and high in the waist to keep out drafts
  • With stirrup straps to avoid ride up (which of course are adjustable and removable).

Sizes for all riders

With the shape and textiles agreed, the next challenge was the range of sizes. Wanting to fit the vast majority of riders Adult sizes ranged from XS – which is approximately a size 8 to XXL – approximately a size 18. All adult sizes are made in 3 leg lengths. Child sizes are made from Age 6 to Age 12. Toddler are also made for Age 2 and Age 4.

Multi Award-winning

In 2018 Horse and Hound awarded the new trousers “Best in Test”. Just Chaps won their first professional accolade at the London Olympia Horse Show and never looked back. We followed our first industry award by formally branding the range “Dri-Rider”. The Dri-Rider range is now formally registered as a Trademark. Dri-Rider Waterproof Systems is recognised for uncompromising, all-weather performance for riders. Following an upgrade (more about that in the paragraph below) the trousers won their second industry award in 2023.

Time for an Upgrade

It was time to look at the next generation of waterproof fabrics. After extensive research and testing, we found a supplier in the north of England. Why did we pick this new fabric..?

  • It has wonderful drape. Sounds a bit flouncy – but this makes the trousers even nicer to wear.
  • It’s a little lighter in weight which has its advantages – you can always add thermals if you need more warmth……
  • It’s made in the UK which not only makes us feel good, but is also easier to control and check
  • Most importantly, this marked the end of the 3-layer construction.
  • The new 2-layer technology is made up of a highly breathable microporous membrane attached to a tough lightweight shell. We still use the lightweight mesh lining and the result is better performance and less weight.
  • All seams are taped. This is another piece of the waterproof jigsaw and without which, the work of the fabric is undone.
  • Zips – another area given great consideration. We constantly research and trial product improvements and are proud to be using the latest technology in waterproof zips.
  • The fabric is independently tested and meets EN343 3.3 which in technical terms means a very high level of waterproofness and breathability.

Washing instructions for Waterproofs.

We advise gentle washing (to keep the membrane clean and breathable). Wash on 40 degrees with a non-bio detergent. No fabric conditioner please. There is no longer any need to reproof the external layer. There’s more technical information on this fabric, and how to care for it here.

Waterproof Full Chaps

We have been focussing on the success of our range of waterproof trousers, however, we must not forget the ever-popular Full Chaps. Let’s look at both options:

Full Chaps with lightweight lining

Probably the lightest-weight waterproofs, with a mesh lining to protect the microporous membrane and wick away any moisture, these breathable full chaps are a year-round essential. You can read more about them here. And buy yours here.

Built to Perform – Whatever the Weather

Dri-Rider trousers are made from a highly technical waterproof and breathable fabric that keeps you dry without overheating. The outer layer is durable and waterproof, while the breathable lining ensures breathability. This two-layer technology comprises of a tough yet lightweight outer (with an impermeable Microporous membrane attached) and a breathable mesh lining.

A few key words on the Microporous membrane. 1. this is a dry system which allows sweat to be vented instantly through the membrane. 2. Microporous works at all temperatures. 2. microporous are hydrophobic (water hating) and resist the passage of water, even under pressure.

Our fabric is tested to EN343 + A1 Foul Weather – which is the highest level of waterproofness and breathability. This equates to a testing of up to 15,000mm. It is abrasion resistant to 75,000 rubs.
