Heading off to pony camp is an exciting adventure for young riders. It’s a chance to improve riding skills, bond with ponies and make lifelong memories. However, for safety and comfort, having the right kit is essential.

1. Half Chaps for Pony Camp.

People ask?  do young riders need Half Chaps ? And the answer is yes! Half Chaps protect the lower leg from bruising and rubbing from the stirrup straps. Half Chaps need to fit well so that they don’t twist. Here are several options to look at:

Demand for children’s waterproofs is on the up. Understandably, the question parents are thinking is “which waterproofs are best for my children?”

To avoid any shopping blunders, we are going to walk you through the Just Chaps Dri-Rider range of waterproofs, both the trousers and full chaps. Armed with our top tips, you will then know exactly which waterproofs are best for your children and can buy accordingly.

As we all know, there is nothing worse than a soggy, miserable child in the yard – and in their defense, young children struggle to tolerate the cold. Let’s help them find the perfect waterproofs.

Are Children’s Waterproofs really necessary?

In a word – yes!. They really are a game changer. Your child will be warmer, cleaner, drier and probably happier. Let’s talk about our range of waterproofs for children: Dri-Rider Trousers and Full Chaps.

Dri-Rider Trousers in Child Sizes

We like to think of these as the perfect waterproof shell. We make them to the same exacting standards as our Adult Dri-Rider Trousers but, to keep the price down, we use a slightly different outer fabric. This in no way alters the performance of the waterproofing, it is just a slightly thicker, denser textile.

Our Dri-Rider Trousers, which have won two industry awards, (read about that here) are comfortable and lightweight. You can wear them as an over-trouser when youre in the yard or at shows. You can also wear them as trousers, possibly with addition of a pair of thermals underneath when the weather is really cold.

Children love our trousers because they have a non-slip seat, are comfortable and the stirrup straps mean that they don’t ride up.

We have also added a super cute range for our smallest riders. The Toddler Waterproof trousers are perfect for ponies, puddles and play. To keep life simple, we’ve made them nice and easy, a toddler-friendly pull-on version with comfy elasticated waist and ankles. In terms of waterproofness, they are made to the same high-tech standards as the adult version.

Waterproof Full Chaps

The difference between trousers and full chaps is that trousers cover your entire bottom half – from waist to ankle – whereas full chaps just cover the full length of the leg – from crotch to ankle. Full chaps fasten at the waist and have full length zips down each leg. This means that you can quickly take them off when you’re in the saddle – before entering the ring. The full chaps come in two weights:

Lightweight Summer Full Chaps

The summer weight is the perfect lightweight shell and comes in blue.

Micro-fleece lined Full Chaps; perfect for Winter.

The Dri-Rider brand of waterproofs has until now, offered a complete waterproof system geared mainly for horse riders. However, the introduction of the Country waterproof trousers, with a few changes, will be perfect for walkers, hikers, spectators. Country trousers are ideal for anyone wanting to stay dry and clean outdoors.

A few words about the Dri-Rider range: technically they’re winners (there’s more about the industry awards later on). The Dri-Rider team design high-tech, high-performance garments to keep you dry in any weather. These garments are perfect for any outdoor adventure, whether it’s walking, hiking, or rambling. The trousers are lightweight and breathable too. Award-winning Waterproofs

Dri-Rider waterproofs are award-winning – and here’s how we’re at the top of our game. We only use the best fabrics for our waterproofs. In terms of technical waterproofing, we use a fully waterproof two-layer technology. The two layers comprise of a tough yet lightweight outer (with an impermeable Microporous membrane attached) and a breathable mesh lining.

Thanks to advanced waterproofing technology, you can simply pop them in the washer without the need for reproofing.
 
A few key words on Microporous. 1. this is a dry system which allows sweat to be vented instantly through the membrane. 2. Microporous works at all temperatures. 2. microporous are hydrophobic (water hating) and resist the passage of water, even under pressure.
 
Our fabric is tested to EN343 + A1 Foul Weather – which is the highest level of waterproofness and breathability. This equates to a testing of up to 15,000mm. It is abrasion resistant to 75,000 rubs.
 
Wash at 40 degrees, with non-bio detergent and no fabric conditioner (it clogs the membrane). Dry away from direct heat. No need to reproof.

Our Dri-Rider range of riding waterproofs are high-performance, technical kit which we designed specifically to prevent you from being cold and wet. We developed the Dri-Rider range of waterproofs to help horse riders of all ages, sizes and disciplines stay dry and warm whether they’re in the yard, in the saddle or at a show. This high-performance range, which has earned the team at Just Chaps 2 industry awards, will do an excellent job of keeping you dry. Let’s look at our Dri-Rider Trousers and Dri-Rider Full Chaps individually.

Waterproof Full Chaps

Riders wear Full Chaps to protect their legs completely, from top to bottom. Full Chaps are flexible and comfortable to wear due, in the main part, to the fully adjustable waist with elastic at the back and an adjustable clasp at the front. We secure the legs with 2 full-length zips and cover the zips with storm flaps, into which we added a discreet Hi Viz piping. The ankle is secured with an adjustable strap and ride-up is prevented by the adjustable stirrups straps. Our full chaps are easy to wear and can be removed from the saddle.

To help protect riders from all weathers, we developed two versions of the Dri-Rider Full Chaps. We added a Micro-fleece lining for warmth without bulk, perfect for those who feel the cold or suffer from chillblains. By contrast, we added a wicking lining to the lightweight version which transforms them into the perfect year-round waterproof shell.

Waterproof Riding Trousers

Our waterproof trousers are multi award-winning, crowned “Best in Test” by Horse & Hound and “Best Waterproof Trousers” by Horse & Rider magazine. As a result, you can be confident of an excellent product.

Let’s talk you through some of the features. Most importantly, our trousers are comfortable and lightweight to wear with a non-slip seat and deep elastic panel at the back. We use only the latest waterproofing technology in our Dri-Rider range. The fabric is a fully-waterproof two-layer technology and we tape all seams. The two layers comprise a tough yet lightweight outer (with an impermeable membrane attached) and a breathable mesh lining. In terms of testing, this fabric meets standards EN 343 3.3 – which is the highest level of waterproofness and breathability. This equates to a testing of up to 15,000mm.

We have recently introduced the Dri-Rider Country Waterproof Trousers – equally high performance as the riding trousers but without the riding features. That means we’ve removed the non-slip seat and stirrup straps. Perfect for ramblers, hikers, walkers, gardeners and you can read about them here.
