Complete Guide to Riding Half Chaps

Rider wearing black leather half chaps with short riding boots

Riding half chaps are a practical alternative to long riding boots. Worn with short riding or jodhpur boots, they cover the lower leg from the ankle to just below the knee. A well-fitting pair helps protect the leg from rubbing and pinching, adds grip and support, and creates a smart, streamlined look.

Whether you are a beginner, an experienced rider, buying for a child or simply looking for a more comfortable option than long boots, the right half chaps can make a real difference. This guide explains what to look for, how to find the correct fit and how to choose between the different materials and styles available.

What are riding half chaps?

Half chaps are close-fitting lower-leg coverings worn over riding breeches, jodhpurs or riding tights. They are designed to be worn with short riding boots and usually fasten with a zip, with an elasticated panel or stretch material helping them fit comfortably around the calf.

Unlike full chaps, which cover most or all of the leg, half chaps cover only the lower leg. Riding gaiters also cover the lower leg, but they tend to have a more structured, formal shape designed to create the appearance of long riding boots when worn with matching short boots. We cover gaiters separately in our Riding Gaiters guide. For a quick comparison, read our Half Chaps vs Riding Gaiters guide.

For a detailed comparison of the different options, read our guide to full chaps, half chaps and gaiters.

What are the benefits of wearing half chaps?

Half chaps are popular with riders of all ages because they combine comfort, protection and flexibility. They can:

  •  help protect the lower leg from rubbing and pinching by the stirrup leathers;
  •  provide extra grip and a more secure feeling against the saddle;
  •  offer support around the lower leg without the stiffness of some long boots;
  •  be worn with comfortable short riding boots;
  •  be easier to fit than long boots, particularly for riders who need a wider, narrower, shorter or taller calf fitting;
  •  give riders a choice of practical, lightweight, suede or smart leather styles; and
  •  be removed easily after riding, leaving short boots to wear around the yard.

For an introduction to their purpose, read our guide to what riding chaps are used for.

Who can wear half chaps?

Half chaps are suitable for beginners, leisure riders, riding schools, children and experienced riders. They are particularly useful for everyday riding, hacking, schooling, riding holidays and long hours in the saddle, including endurance riding. Our article about Just Chaps’ connection with Scottish endurance riding explains why comfortable, lightweight half chaps are well suited to longer distances.

Half chaps can be worn at competitions when worn with the correct boots. However, competition rules may vary between disciplines and organisers, so always check the current rules before competing.

For advice on chunkier footwear, read our guide to half chaps for chunky riding boots.

How should half chaps fit?

Half chaps should feel close and supportive without being painfully tight. They should sit neatly from just below the back of the knee to the ankle, without large gaps, excessive wrinkling or pressure behind the knee.

A new pair may initially feel snug, particularly if it is made from leather or suede, as these natural materials will soften and give with wear. The zip should close securely without forcing it, and the chap should not twist or slip down during wear.

For practical fastening tips, read our guide to putting on riding half chaps and gaiters.

How to measure for half chaps

Just Chaps sizing uses two key pieces of information: the rider’s approximate height and the calf measurement. Together, these help identify the correct height and width combination.

  1. Use the rider’s approximate height to identify the most suitable height fitting in your chosen style.
  2. Wearing the breeches, jodhpurs or riding tights normally used for riding, measure around the widest part of the calf.
  3. Keep the tape measure level and comfortably close to the leg without pulling it tight.
  4. Compare both measurements with the sizing guide for the particular half chap style.

If you are between sizes or unsure which combination will work best, contact Just Chaps for fitting advice before ordering.

For help choosing your size, read our guide to measuring for half chaps and riding gaiters.

If you need a shorter height, read our guide to short riding half chaps and gaiters.

Half Chaps for Wider Calves and Extension Panels

Just Chaps offers wider calf fittings across the half chaps range. Start by checking the sizes available in your preferred style. For help comparing materials and fits, read our guide to half chaps and riding gaiters for wider calves.

If you need additional calf room, our Riding Half Chaps Zip Extension Panel works with All Purpose Riding Half Chaps, Cool Riding Half Chaps and Classic Suede Riding Half Chaps. Choosing the right material

The best material depends on where, when and how often you ride, as well as the look you prefer.

Leather half chaps

Leather gives a smart, close-fitting appearance and tends to mould to the leg with wear. It is a popular choice for riders who want the look of long boots with the convenience of separate short boots and half chaps. Leather needs appropriate care to keep it supple and looking its best.

For more advice on comfort and fit, read our guide to stretch leather half chaps.

Suede half chaps

Suede is a traditional half-chap material. It offers good grip and comfort and is well suited to everyday riding. It has a softer, more relaxed appearance than smooth leather and should be cleaned with products suitable for suede.

Neoprene half chaps

Neoprene and other stretch materials are practical, flexible and easy to look after. They are a good choice for riding schools, everyday riders, growing children and anyone who prioritises comfort and durability.

Perforated half chaps

Lightweight or perforated materials can be more comfortable in warm weather. They are particularly useful for summer riding, riding holidays and destinations where keeping cool is a priority.

Half chaps for adults, children and toddlers

A good fit should not be limited to one standard calf shape. The Just Chaps range includes adult half chaps, plus children’s and toddler half chaps, with different heights and calf widths available across the collection. This makes it easier to find a comfortable combination for shorter, taller, slimmer and wider calves.

Not every style uses the same sizing system, so always check the individual product’s size guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do beginners need half chaps?

Half chaps are not compulsory for learning to ride, but many beginners find them more comfortable than riding in short boots alone. They help protect the lower leg and can provide extra grip and support.

Can children wear half chaps?

Yes. Children’s and toddler half chaps are available in sizes designed for younger riders. A comfortable, close fit is important, but there should still be room for movement and growth.

Can I wear half chaps for competitions?

Yes, where permitted by the rules for your discipline and competition. Always check the current requirements before competing.

Are half chaps better than long riding boots?

Neither option is automatically better. Half chaps with short boots offer flexibility, easier fitting and everyday practicality. Long boots provide a single, more formal boot. The best choice depends on comfort, fit, budget and the type of riding you do.
