Half Chaps for the Mongol Derby: Choosing Your Kit

Two horse riders crossing grassland during the Mongol Derby

Preparing for the Mongol Derby means choosing riding kit you can rely on for long days on horseback. Comfortable half chaps are part of that preparation, alongside suitable boots and riding clothing.

The best half chaps for you are the ones that fit comfortably and have been thoroughly tried during training. Here we look at what to consider, with an example from rider Kelsey Elliot’s preparations.

What to Look for in Your Half Chaps

Half chaps provide a layer between your lower leg and the stirrup leathers, helping to reduce rubbing. For long rides, consider:

  • A comfortable fit that stays secure.
  • Flexibility through the calf and ankle.
  • Compatibility with your riding boots and trousers.
  • Durable materials and straightforward care.

Try your full combination of boots, socks, trousers and half chaps on longer training rides. This gives you time to identify any rubbing or discomfort before travelling.

For an overview of the different materials and styles, read our Complete Guide to Riding Half Chaps.

All Purpose Riding Half Chaps

Our All Purpose Riding Half Chaps are made from soft, stretchy neoprene. A stretch panel behind the zip provides additional flexibility in fit.

They are lightweight, hard-wearing and machine washable, making them a practical option for riders who want comfortable kit that is easy to look after.

If you need additional calf room, our Riding Half Chaps Zip Extension Panel works with the All Purpose range. Choose the panel that matches the height of your half chaps.

Kelsey Elliot’s Training Experience

When preparing for the Mongol Derby, Kelsey Elliot focused on spending more time riding and testing her kit.

Her plans included a week of riding at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, beginning with a 25-mile endurance ride. She saw this as an opportunity to assess her progress and understand how much preparation she still needed.

Kelsey also described building her horses’ fitness through steady hill work and trotting. She gradually increased either the distance or the pace of each ride.

During those preparations, she wore Just Chaps All Purpose Riding Half Chaps and reported that they were one part of her kit she did not need to worry about.

Check Your Fit Before Travelling

Measure around the widest part of your calf while wearing your riding trousers. For adult half chaps, use your height and calf measurement to select a size with our sizing guide.

Your half chaps should feel snug and comfortable. Check that you can fasten the zip without forcing it, then try them with the boots you intend to take.

Allow time to test any new pair during training. Familiar kit that you have worn on several rides will give you a clearer idea of how it feels over longer distances.

Just Chaps Supports Scottish Endurance Riding

What Is the Scottish Endurance Riding Club?

For many years, Just Chaps has been proud to support Scottish Endurance. The Scottish Endurance Riding Club (SERC) has eight regional branches across Scotland, organising rides and events for riders of different experience levels.

Endurance riding gives horse and rider combinations the opportunity to follow marked routes through varied countryside. Events range from introductory rides for newcomers to more demanding distances for experienced endurance riders.

Just Chaps Connects with Endurance Riding

Just Chaps has a long-standing connection with endurance riding. The company’s founder was an endurance rider, and this first-hand experience helped shape the development of half chaps designed for long hours in the saddle. Comfort, flexibility and durability remain especially important for riders covering longer distances.

Why Half Chaps Work Well for Endurance Riding

Endurance riders spend long hours in the saddle, so comfortable, well-fitting half chaps can make a real difference. They help protect the lower leg while providing the flexibility and durability needed for riding over longer distances.

Comfort

Comfort is essential during long hours in the saddle. SERC competitor Sheila Bruce favours our Cool Riding Half Chaps, which are made from lightweight, perforated faux suede. They are breathable, flexible and washable, making them particularly suitable for endurance riding, warmer weather and riding holidays.

For further insights into these popular lightweight Half Chaps, check out our blog, “Which Half Chaps Are Best for Summer.”

Durability

Durability is equally important for endurance riders. Half chaps need to withstand regular use over varied terrain while remaining comfortable throughout the ride. Just Chaps uses durable fabrics, reliable zips and practical designs to create half chaps suitable for demanding everyday riding.

Not sure which style would suit you? Read our Complete Guide to Half Chaps for help comparing the different options, or use our Half Chaps and Gaiters Sizing Guide to find your size. If you would like personal advice, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

Continuing to Support Scottish Endurance

Just Chaps is proud of its long-standing connection with Scottish Endurance and the riders who take part in this demanding discipline. We remain committed to providing comfortable, durable half chaps that allow riders to concentrate on their horses and enjoy their time in the saddle.

Why Half Chaps Are Ideal for Endurance Riding

Jacqueline Macmillan with Misty at an endurance ride

Jacqueline Macmillan shares her passion for Endurance:

Welsh cob Brynfa Gwanwen, AKA Misty, is a star.  Welsh born, bought from Crewe in July 2017 and now residing in Perthshire, Scotland. I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter pony and have been surprisingly blown away by her performance in endurance riding. Having successfully completed several pleasure rides last year, we have now upped our game to competitive rides.

I’m a member of the Scottish Endurance Riding Club (SERC). We have taster rides (8-14km), pleasure rides (15km-29km) and competitive rides (30kms upwards). SERC members ride longer distances using a unique thistle grading system which is unique to this Organisation. The starting level is Bronze (up to 50k), progressing to Silver (60k) and Gold (80k) Series. The top two levels are the Platinum (120k) and Diamond (160k) Awards.

Misty has successfully completed two 30km rides to achieve 2 bronze qualifiers. This allows us to enter a 50km class and hopefully achieve our Bronze Thistle Final.

Why Choose Half Chaps for Endurance Riding?

Spending longer in the saddle (and stirrups!) however can cause some discomfort. Having previously ridden in long leather boots, the decision was made, after consulting with other fellow riders, to change to short boots and half chaps. I had heard lots about Just Chaps and fortunately got the chance to meet them at a local show. After trying on a few pairs, the fit and the feel was fantastic! My favourite was the All Purpose Half Chaps. What a difference they made to the overall comfort of long-distance riding.

All Purpose Half Chaps are a practical choice for endurance riders. Their flexible fit provides comfort during long hours in the saddle, while the durable, machine-washable material helps protect the lower leg in changing conditions.

So, kitted out we entered our first 50km ride at SERC’s Seacliff ride in East Lothian on 16th June 2019…wow what a fabulous route! Taking four hours and 31 minutes to complete the 51 km route, we thankfully vetted successfully and achieved our Bronze Thistle Final Award.

Thank you to the Just Chaps team for sending me the chaps so quickly. I have machine washed them and packed them away, ready for our next venture.

Choosing comfortable, correctly fitted half chaps can make a real difference during long-distance riding. Our range includes flexible options for different calf widths and rider heights.
